Bring home your personal obstacle remover - by Raj Rao

Do you get a feeling that your life has become an obstacle race? Your time and life is being taken away from you? Then it is about time you brought home your personal obstacle remover!
The practice of bringing home Ganesha for 10 days is not only symbolic but also therapeutic for the soul. Ganesha is the super intelligent being who wrote the Mahabharata in one sitting. He is the divine counselor of all counselors. He brings you the solutions that you seek in your life. He is the Vignaharta – the remover of obstacles.
This everybody knows. What you may not know is that, Ganesha is also the Adi Devata – the guiding deity of Astrology. All Vedic Astrology is said to have originated from the Ganesha. The true purpose of Astrology is the acheivement of Personal Growth and enabling inter-personal harmony. Neither of them is possible if you are surrounded by obstacles.
The portrayal of Lord Ganesha as a blend of human and animal parts symbolizes the ideals of perfection as conceived by our ancient sages and illustrates the path we should take to remove obstacles in our life.
The elephant head tells us that human beings are not only intelligent but also have volitional conciousness, which is unique among all the living beings. We have choices all around us, how we respond to situations around us shapes our future. The large mouth our deep desire to enjoy good things in life. The big ears is the capacity of our senses to assimilate everything around us. The elephant trunk can uproot a tree and at the same time. This shows the need for our mind to be sharp enough to discriminate the right and wrong, the good and bad, the just and unjust. Also choose the things that help you grow and leave behind that hinders your growth or your relationships.
The two tusks of Ganesha represent the wisdom and emotion. The broken left tusk of emotion conveys that we need to conquer our emotion and to use it as an instrument - like he did to write the Mahabharata.
Ganesha’s eyes symbolize the idea that even if an individual gets big in wealth, wisdom and social status, he should perceive others to be bigger than himself and surrender one’s pride to attain humility.
Ganesha’s axe in the upper left hand and a lotus in the upper right hand signify that in order to attain spiritual perfection, one should cut worldly attachments and conquer emotions. This enables one to live in the world without being affected by earthly temptations, just as a lotus remains in water but is not affected by it.
Ganesha’s body is usually portrayed wearing red and yellow clothes. Yellow symbolizes purity, peace and truthfulness. Red symbolizes the activity in the world. These are the qualities of a perfect person who perforrns all duties in the world, with purity, peace, and truthfulness.
Ganesha by using the mouse as his vehicle and keeping the mouse at his feet, tells us to conquer our ego. You can ride the mouse, only if you have the supreme confidence and the humility that comes by controlling your ego.
The twin goals of personal growth and inter-personal harmony can be best served by bringing home everything that the Ganesha or Vignaharta symbolises.
